Are Government Incentives and Charging Networks Holding Back Ireland’s Solar & EV Revolution? Share Your Voice and Win!

Ireland’s clean energy transition is accelerating, but real progress depends on understanding what’s holding people back- and what’s driving them forward. That’s why GoPlugable EV Charging and Blackwell Energy are inviting you to take part in the Solar & EV Confidence Meter Ireland survey. Your experience and opinions will help shape policy, business offerings, and the national conversation on solar and electric vehicles. Plus, you could win a €300 One4All voucher and unlock exclusive rewards!

What We’re Hearing: Insights from the Survey

50% of respondents say they’re waiting for more government incentives before installing solar panels.

This highlights the critical role of financial support in driving solar adoption.

Around 60% cite a lack of EV chargers as a barrier to buying an electric vehicle.

Even as infrastructure expands, “charger anxiety” is real and must be addressed.

The State of Solar in Ireland: Growth, Incentives & Opportunity

Solar is now the fastest-growing renewable power source in Ireland, with over 500 MW of microgeneration capacity as of Q1 20251.

Domestic solar installations are booming:

  • Households are installing solar at a rate of 500 systems per week4.

  • The cost of a home solar PV system has dropped to €7,000–€10,000 with a payback period of just 6–7 years2.

Government grants remain a key driver:

  • The SEAI Solar PV Grant for homes is now up to €1,800 (down from €2,100 in 2024), covering €700/kWp for the first 2 kWp and €200/kWp for each additional kWp up to 4 kWp2.

  • Feed-in tariffs allow homeowners to sell surplus solar energy back to the grid, with rates up to 25 cents/kWh (Pinergy), making solar even more attractive5.

Utility-scale solar is surging:

  • Solar capacity grew by 42.6% by mid-2024, reaching a projected 1,600 MW by year-end2.

  • In April 2025, solar provided about 4% of all-island electricity demand, with peak output reaching 780 MW1.

  • Top solar-producing counties: Meath (49 GWh), Wexford (22 GWh), Cork (14 GWh)

EV Charging in Ireland: Progress and Perception

  • Ireland’s public EV charging network has expanded to 2,400 charge points in 2024 (up from 1,700 in 2022), with government targets aiming for 3,200–6,210 public chargers by 20254.

  • Charger anxiety persists: Despite this growth, 60% of survey respondents still feel there aren’t enough chargers, reflecting either real gaps or a lack of public awareness about the rapidly expanding network.

  • Government investment: Over €100 million is being invested in EV charging infrastructure between 2022 and 2025, with new high-power hubs being added every 60 km on major routes
